The interesting part about it was that I was able to calm him down with my voice. He stopped screaming and stopped squirming. I was able to push his legs back and get him out from being wedged and there was no damage to his leg whatsoever. At this very second he's resting next to me.
I'd rather keep him from doing it again, so I guess I get to go looking for a crate.
I have to say though, it's one helluva way to wake up.
